The Selkirk Rex was developed in the 1990s, and the first species was discovered in 1987, in Montana. Jeri Newman, from Wyoming, accepted this curl-haired white-tortie female and bred her to one of her Persian cats. During the 1990s, the breed was registered at several associations.
