There are uncountable numbers of cat breeds in the world, and there are both ancient and brand new breeds. Ancient Burmese, Siamese, Balinese and other oriental species figure in old legends and historic accounts as lifelong companions of monks. Many new breeds owe their existence to those who have contributed much of their appearance and temperament to the formation of new species. For example, Hymalayans have the coat of Persians and the pointed Siamese coloring.
