The breed can be traced back to a stray cat named Shulamith, which was found in California in 1981. The breed is recognized as one of the United States’ native breed. Selective breeding began in 1983 and in 1986 the breed was registered by CFA.

The distinctive feature of the breed is ears that wind back and form a very graceful arc of 90-180 degrees. It is a natural mutation and some representatives of the breed don’t have it; they are considered to be of pet quality.
